Frequently Asked Questions
?What is ADSL?
ASDL is an abbreviation for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line.
It is a broadband technology which is able to use existing copper wired telephone networks to deliver much higher speeds than currently available via 56k modems.
?How is it possible to use internet and voice over the same line at the same time?
The ASDL technology essentially treats a single copper wire as two channels transmitting at different frequencies. The voice information is transmitted at a lower frequency (up to 20kHz), whilst the data uses higher frequencies (up to 1.104MHz).
?Do I still have to pay for BT line rental if I have ADSL?
Yes. BT's telephone billing (the line rental and call charges) are unrelated to ADSL. ADSL is simply sharing the same line as your standard telephone line. You will however not have to pay any call charges when using the ADSL part of the line.
?Where is the Mossley exchange located?
Stanhope Street (near to Egmont Street Playing Fields).
?Once an exchange is enabled, are there any other requirements before I can have ADSL installed?
Yes. The length of the telephone line (this is not necessary the same as the physical distance) from your telephone point to the exchange must be no greater than 5.5km (for the 512kbps product) and no greater than 3.5km (for the 1Mbps and 2Mbps products). There is a useful tool available online which estimates the approximate distance you are from the exchange. Please check out our Links Page for further details.
Additional tests may also be undertaken by BT Wholesale to ensure the quality of the line is sufficient to accept ADSL.
